100 years ago, 1917
The plant of the Colonial Paper Co. in Mechanic Falls was practically destroyed by fire early today. The loss is estimated at $40,000. No official statement of the value of the buildings or of the insurance could be obtained from local owners. The blaze is believed to have been caused by a short circuit in the electric lighting system.

50 years ago, 1967
Several Lewiston teenagers have been selected as members of an advisory group which will offer suggestions to Lewiston city officials who are currently drafting an application for a federal grant which, if approved, would be used to build a multi-purpose center in Lewiston. The young people are Lewiston High School seniors. It was said that other schools will be represented.

25 years ago, 1992
Poland Town Manager Richard Chick told selectmen on Tuesday that he is preparing options for the future of the town transfer station. Chick said he had been advised by the state Department of Environmental Protection that, after Dec. 31, “we will no longer be able to use the area at the top of the hill for disposal of brush, wood and demolition waste. I am in the process,” he said, “of preparing a list of alternatives for a transfer operation.” Solid waste disposal costs were described by Selectmen Chairman Raymond Levesque as one of two “looming big potential items in the fiscal 1994 municipal budget.”
