In response to complaints from parents that student activity funds should not be used to pay for Saturday detentions at Auburn Middle School, the School Committee voted Wednesday to finance the weekend detentions with money from the general fund. The committee had originally approved a plan to pay for the Saturday detentions, the first of which is scheduled for this weekend, with proceeds from student fundraising activities. Ward 4 committee member Tina Short said, “It doesn’t seem fair to ask kids to raise money that will be used for detentions. In all honesty, I don’t think the kids in detention will be the ones who raised the money.”
