JAY — Ann Marie Umbro, 63, earned her Angel Wings on Monday morning, Dec. 18, at her home in Jay.

Anne was born in Rumford on April 17, 1954, to Vito and Antoinette (DeFilipp) Umbro Jr. Anne was born with Down syndrome and brought much love to all who knew her. She grew up in Smithcrossing, the Italian section of Rumford, along with many of her aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Anne attended the Hope School in Mexico, which was founded by her parents and other parents of special needs children, in order to educate their children. Anne graduated from Hope School on June 8, 1982. Anne was a beautiful soul and was very social like her dad, who owned Umbro’s Tailor Shop in downtown Rumford. She lost her mom at the age of 13 and gained a new mother a few years later. Olive (Hillaire) took Anne under her wing and cared for her for many years. In 1984, Olive placed Anne in a residential home with LEAP (Life Enrichment Advancing People). Anne loved her new home and had quite a social life along with a job. She worked through the program Work First. She watered flowers at Sandy River Nursing Home, shredded paper at Strong Medical Services, hung clothes and cleaned at the Touch of Class thrift shop. On Dec. 8, 2016, Anne retired.

Anne participated in Special Olympics by snowshoeing and cross country skiing. She was also known as quite a fisherwoman, winning a trophy at one of their tournaments. Anne loved people and was especially fond of dances and parties. Anne loved to dance and always had a boyfriend to dance with. She was the life of the party and was well-loved by all who knew her.

Anne Marie joined her dad, Vito Jr., mother Antoinette, stepmother Olive, brother Vito III (Butch), maternal grandparents Germano and Anna DeFilipp, paternal grandparents Vito and Teresa Umbro Sr., and many aunts and uncles.

Anne is survived by her sister, Teresa Umbro; sister-in-law Barbara Umbro; nephews Vito Umbro IV and his wife Julia and Joshua Umbro; nieces Stephanie Umbro, Becky Deshaies and husband Tim, Lisa Heisey and husband Derrick; great-nephew Owen Heisey and great-nieces Megan and Allison Deshaies, Lucy and Molly Umbro, Emma and Anna Heisey; aunts Frances DeFilipp, Andrea DeFilipp, and Aldona DeFilipp; many cousins and many loving caretakers at LEAP.
