100 years ago, 1917
Sheriff Stevens has instructed his men to seize all liquor found anywhere unless it bears the original doctor’s prescription pasted on the outside. In other words, from now on, all persons ordering liquor must send, with the order, their original doctor’s prescription, which must be pasted on the package by the shipper who sends the goods to this county. This scheme is said to have been tried out in Portland with fine success and Sheriff Stevens believes it deserves trial here.

50 years ago, 1967
Approximately 180 Lewiston youngsters, members of the School Safety Patrol, were entertained by the city and the Lewiston Police Athletic League yesterday afternoon as the annual Christmas party was held at city hall auditorium. Lt. Herve Gendreau, head of the Lewiston Traffic Bureau, who was in charge of the program, said today that 184 boys and girls participated. Over 100 prizes, given by the city and the PAL, were distributed and each youngster upon leaving received a grab-bag and a candied apple. “Over 500 cups of soft drinks were given out during the party,” Gendreau reported. Mayor William Rocheleau Jr. was present at the early and extended season’s greetings to the young people.

25 years ago, 1992
A poster drawn by a student at Great Falls Intermediate School in Auburn was selected the grand prize winner of Central Maine Power Co.’s electrical safety poster contest. Sixth-grader Jon Elcewicz received a mountain bike for his winning entry, which warns against putting a metal object into a toaster. Jon and two other contest finalists, their classmates and teachers toured the State Capitol and the Maine State Museum and were guests at CMP’s headquarters.
