LPL gathering Knitting Knights

LEWISTON — Lewiston Public Library will host a knitting and crochet group from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, in the first floor’s Jeanne Couture room.

All ages and skill levels are welcome, and a limited amount of material will be available for new knitters to take home with them, including knitting needles and yarn. Library staff will be available to teach new knitters. Hot tea and water will be available.

Civil War medicine talk in Hebron

HEBRON — Carolyn Lawson of the Norlands Living History Center will speak to the Hebron Historical Society on “Civil War Medicine, Myths and Minie Balls” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at the Town Office, 351 Paris Road. The public is invited.

Students invited to learn game of chess

HARRISON — Students in fourth through 12th grade from the Lake Region and Oxfords schools are invited to learn the game of chess or to improve their skills

The opportunity will be available from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays at the Caswell Conservancy Center, 42 Main St., at no cost. Adults supervision by individuals to help students with the game will be available.

Permission slips from the parents or guardians for each student are required for before attending.

Contra dance in Norway planned

NORWAY — A contra dance will be be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at First UU Church of Norway, 479 Main St.

Music will be played by the Better Late than Never Band, and Maggie Robinson will call.

The cost is $8 a person with a family maximum of $20. Beginners are welcome with or without a partner. Dancers should bring clean shoes for dancing.

Society room opens to public

TEMPLE — The Temple Historical Society Room at the Temple Town Hall will be open to the public from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21.

Members will be available to assist in genealogy research, to chat about the society and town history and preservation projects. Dozens of documented photo albums will be available for guests to peruse, and many albums handwritten by earlier citizens will be available for public use.

The society’s monthly meeting will be held at the close of the open house at 3 p.m., and anyone who would like to join is welcome to stay and participate.

New Gloucester Democrats to meet

NEW GLOUCESTER — The New Gloucester Democratic Committee will host a meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at the Community Building, 381 Intervale Road, behind Town Hall.

The March 4 biennial caucus and other business will be on the agenda. All registered Democrats are invited to attend. Note that this meeting is not sponsored by the town of New Gloucester.

Library sewing group offering free project

POLAND — The sewing group at A.B. Ricker Memorial Library will meet from noon to 4 p.m Thursday, Jan. 18, in the downstairs community room. The project will be a novelty fish potholder.

All are welcome, including beginners.

Cynthia Maxwell will be the instructor. Materials needed are: a quarter yard each of two contrasting fabrics; a quarter yard of 100 percent cotton batting; two buttons for eyes (flat buttons, no shank, an inch or less); and thread. Also bring scissors, needle, thread, pins.

A couple of sewing machines will be available and sewers may bring their own. The project is free.

On Thursday, Feb. 22, the group will make a table runner.
