NORWAY — The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously Thursday evening to invite School Administrative District Superintendent Rick Colpitts to a meeting to explain how the school budget is drafted.

“I’d like to get the school board members to come to a budget meeting so we can find out how their budget is presented and how they figure out the numbers,” Selectman Thomas Curtis said. “I think it would be a good idea if we became a little more involved. I think the tax situation is getting untenable for some of the people in Norway. It’s very high, and I think if we get involved now, we may be able to help halt increases or realign money being spent.”

Selectman Russell Newcomb favored inviting Colpitts.

“I didn’t really think that there was a place in the process where we could participate other than as taxpayers attending public hearings and going to the polls, but maybe there’s a way for us to participate that we haven’t been doing in the past,” Newcomb said.

In other business, selectmen voted unanimously to accept a $65,358 reimbursement from the defunct Oxford County Regional Recycling Corp. Most member towns voted in July 2016 to dissolve the corporation and disburse equipment and funds to towns that invested in it.

Chairman Warren Sessions Jr., who was general manager of the corporation, said all the towns that gave money to participate would be paid back, and those that were in “since day one, like Norway and Paris,” would receive extra.
