LEWISTON — A small sinkhole opened up on Webber Avenue late Thursday afternoon, sending public works crews scrambling with orange cones.
The cave-in, reported at about 5:15 p.m., was likely the result of a ruptured sewer line beneath the street, according to Jon Elie, highway operations manager with Lewiston Public Works.
The resulting hole, about a foot across and a foot deep, opened up near the center of Webber Avenue between First and Second streets.
Crews expect to dig down to the sewer line in coming days to make repairs. In the meantime, the hole was surrounded by traffic cones and covered with an orange barrel.
Webber Avenue remained passable Thursday night, although crews may shut down the section between Lisbon and Pleasant streets when the digging begins.
