More than 139 area campers registered Tuesday night for the first session of the annual YWCA Family Camping Clinic at the Kate T. Anthony House and heard two interesting talks on outdoor cooking. One of the presentations was by F O. Whitmore of Auburn. The Whitmores go each year to an established camping area where cooking facilities are easier than the strictly wilderness camping facilities described by Franklin Gerry, the other speaker. Each of the speakers discussed the methods he uses in preparing family meals and displayed some of the equipment utilized. Whitmore spoke more of preparing meals, including baking, over a cement block fireplace and both described the many uses of aluminum foil.

The Lisbon Street Reconstruction Project will be up for City Council action Tuesday, with several new recommendations proposed to meet residents’ and business owners’ concerns. Councilors are expected to vote on endorsing a design that would give the East Avenue to Pleasant Street stretch of Lisbon Street a fifth, center lane for left turns. The proposal, as amended in earlier review, includes a 7-foot sidewalk on the northeasterly side and a 5-foot sidewalk on the southwesterly (or Androscoggin River) side of the street.
