AUBURN — Skelton Taintor & Abbott attorney Jordan Payne Hay will present at a roundtable discussion hosted by the Oxford Hills SCORE and Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce on May 16.

The topic is Branding and Trademarking: Legal Considerations.

The roundtable will address issues surrounding intellectual property and explore the difference between copyright, trademark, service mark, patents and trade dress. Branding can be crucial to a business’ identity, and participants will learn about important legal factors that go into protecting that identity.

Hay will discuss aspects, such as the reasons to get a trademark, how to register, where to register and the benefits and pitfalls of not registering. She will also explore whether a business should register with the state or at the federal level.

Hay’s practice areas at Skelton Taintor & Abbott include employment law, civil rights, human rights support, intellectual property and litigation, disputes and appeals. She is licensed to practice in Maine and Massachusetts.
