PRESCOTT, Ariz. — Constance “Connie” Gail Scribner Smith was born in Lewiston in 1935 to David Walter Scribner and Glenys Reinette (Carlson) Scribner. Connie passed away with her family at her side at the YRMC hospital in Prescott, Ariz., on Wednesday, May 2, as a result of multiple illnesses and infections.

Connie grew up in the small mill town of Lisbon Falls, where her father owned and operated the drug store and soda shop. She graduated from high school in Lisbon Falls and attended Tufts University in Boston. She later worked for the telephone company until she met and married Lt. Barton Smith, U.S. Navy, in 1955.

She enjoyed the Navy lifestyle, and even endured multiple household moves for the next 21 years during active duty. She was a leader among the Navy wives and served as president of many wives’ groups, and led charitable fundraising events.

She later started her own business administering FAA written exams to aspiring pilots and aviation mechanics. She quickly became an integral part of the “Oakland California Airport family,” as evidenced when the aviation schools and training facilities, local mechanics and private airplane owners dubbed her the “Mother of Earhart Road,” the street where they were all located. She was honored by the FAA for her diligence and integrity in testing the students.

She brought four children into the world and raised them to be wonderful parents, who are compassionate and contributing members of their communities.

She is survived by husband, Bart; daughter, Dana (Len DeJoria); sons Mark, Barton (Kirsten), Steven (Cleo); and seven grandchildren.
