AUBURN — Richard “Dick” Leavitt, 79, of Poland Road in Auburn passed away with his family at his side while at Hospice House following a long illness.

He was born in Auburn on Jan. 10, 1939, the son of the late Charles and Edith (Hanscom) Leavitt. He attended Auburn schools, and in 1958 joined the U.S. Army. When he returned from the Army, he married the love of his life, Carole McNall, who predeceased him in 2007. During their marriage, they raised three children: Rodney, Blaine and Robyn.

He worked at several local shoe shops, where he always said he enjoyed working. He was a watchman at Tambrands Inc. for many years, until his retirement, when he began volunteering at Central Maine Medical Center, where he would become a dedicated volunteer for more than 23 years, logging more than 20,000 hours and recently receiving the SPOT Award, which recognizes his many years of volunteer work at CMMC. He had many special friends from the volunteer office, especially his “Wednesday Girls,” and many friends he cherished from Court Street Baptist Church, which he attended. Dick will be remembered for his quick wit and funny stories, his famous peanut butter fudge and love of his boxer dogs Sarge and Duke. His family was his world, and Cundys Harbor will always be that special place for Leavitt reunions. It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye. We are comforted knowing you are once again in the arms of your beloved wife, Carole.

Dick is survived by his children: Rodney Leavitt and his wife, Cindy; Blaine Leavitt and his wife, Jean; Robyn Spugnardi and her husband, Keith; four grandchildren: Cody, Zachary, Brianna and Joseph; one very special great-grandchild, Paisly; a special niece, Judy Kelly, and her husband, Dave; his sister, Dolly Eastman, and brother, Gard Leavitt, and his wife, Sandy; and many cherished nieces and nephews, and his little buddy, Major. As Dick always said: “There are three types of people in this world: The Leavitts, people who marry Leavitts and people that wish they were Leavitts.”

He was predeceased by his wife, Carole Leavitt; brother, Roland “Bub” Leavitt; and sisters Cleo Cortes, June Miles and Joan Gagne.
