KINGFIELD — Selectmen approved a policy Monday night requiring all burials or work in town cemeteries be authorized by town sexton Seth Nickerson.

Nickerson will also maintain maps of town cemeteries.

The sexton is a private contractor, said Administrative Assistant Leanna Targett, who is the backup sexton.

Selectmen also updated the street sweeping policy to clarify that only sand will be collected, not brush, limbs, leaves and similar debris.

Also at their meeting, selectmen awarded a tax-acquired lot on West Kingfield Road to Brian Goss for his bid of $3,072. He lives across the road from the lot.

Other bids were from abutter Rob Sawyer for $3,001 and Laura Quinn for $3,000.

Selectmen also discussed the possibility of limiting the use of or banning plastic shopping bags in town because of their affect on the environment.

“Somebody’s got to start the ball rolling in the right direction,” Selectman Walter Kilbreth said.

He suggested eliminating the use of plastic bags in the retail sector would be a start.

“This needs to start with some public discussion,” Targett said. “Basically, we’re talking about banning something in our town.”

If selectmen banned plastic bags at the transfer station, it would affect out-of-town residents who also use the station, Targett said.

Selectmen agreed to research actions by other towns, talk to residents and continue the discussion.

In other matters, residents are invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, at the newly rebuilt baseball field at West Kingfield Road and Main Street. Following the ceremony, former professional baseball players will conduct a free clinic for area children from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

On Sunday, July 22, the public is invited to the Webster Public Library for dedication of a children’s bench and a ramp, both provided through donations from the community.
