FARMINGTON — Two teenage girls were injured Monday when their side-by-side recreation vehicle struck a tree and rolled over, landing on the driver on Owen Manning Road in West Farmington.
The 14-year-old driver from Farmington was attempting to take a right turn into a driveway, but the ATV was going too fast, hit a tree and rolled over, partially ejecting her and fully ejecting her 17-year-old passenger, according to Officer Darin Gilbert of the Farmington Police Department.
The driver was trapped under the roll cage.
Firefighters had to cut the steering wheel to get it off her leg, according to Gilbert.
Firefighters and police lifted the ATV off the girl and pushed it back up onto its tires. Farmington Fire Rescue Chief Tim Hardy was inside the vehicle trying to keep the driver calm, Gilbert said.
NorthStar EMS ambulance personnel treated the teenagers at the scene. A Franklin County deputy also assisted at the scene.
The girls’ names were not immediately available. The accident remains under investigation.
Neither teenager was wearing a helmet or seat belt, Gilbert said.
The teenagers were taken by ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, where they were treated for cuts and bruises and released.
“They are both very, very lucky,” he said.
The 2012 Can-Am Commander they were riding is owned the by the driver’s parents.
