BOSTON — The Red Sox Foundation presented two area public high school seniors with $1,000 college scholarships during Maine Day at Fenway Park presented by Jenzabar and supported by Ford Motor Co.

Sumaya Mohamed of Lewiston and Chloe Veilleux of Turner were recognized as recipients of the Maine Red Sox Service Scholarships during a pregame ceremony Sunday, July 29. Mohamed threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

The program awarded students from public high schools across Maine with $1,000 scholarships toward their college education based on academic performance, financial aid eligibility and demonstrated community service.

The recipients were congratulated on the field by Red Sox President & CEO Sam Kennedy and Red Sox Executive Vice President Troup Parkinson. Also attending the ceremony were Bob Maginn, CEO and chairman of Jenzabar; David Abatsis, chairman of New England Ford Dealer Advertising and representative of the Ford Motor Company Fund; and Amanda Heglin, Sox Service Scholarship Committee member.

The service scholarship program was introduced in 2010 by then-New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch, and Red Sox Principal owner John W. Henry and Red Sox Foundation board member Linda Pizzuti Henry.

The New England Red Sox Service Scholarships Program has grown to include 170 high schools throughout Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Vermont.
