LEWISTON — William J. Damon, 85, of Norway passed away Tuesday, Aug. 14, at Central Maine Medical Center.

He was born in Oxford on May 22, 1933, the son of William C. and Evelyn Brown Damon. He graduated from Norway High School in 1952. Bill married Beatrice M. Doble on Aug. 19, 1954. He served with the Army National Guard in Norway, retiring as 1st sergeant after 34 years.

He worked at B.E. Cole Shoe factory, then moving to Bridgeport, Conn., where he worked at the Singer Sewing Machine Co. before coming back to Maine, where he worked at A.C. Lawrence, working his way up to personnel manager for 26 years before the factory closed in 1986. For the next eight years, he was the manager at Norway-Paris Solid Waste, until retiring in 1995.

In 1975, he was a member of the advisory board at White Mountain National Forest, representing the Maine Snowmobile Association. He had been a Boy Scout leader, a member of the Norway Fire Department for 10 years in the 1970s, and the past president of Norway Paris Fish & Game. He served the town of Norway for many years as a selectman, a budget committee member and was board chairman of appeals. He was also a member of the Foster-Carroll American Legion, Norway Historical Society and The Weary Club.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Beatrice, of Norway; his son, William E., and wife, Michelle, of Norway; two grandchildren: Andrea and her husband, Jamie Flan, of Long Prairie, Minn., and Daniel Hermanson of Fargo, N.D.; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert, of Auburn; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers Fred, James and Jerry Lee.
