OXFORD — The Board of Selectmen on Thursday discussed the future of the Municipal Building on Pleasant Street, while town officials wait for an estimate on removing mold and mildew in the basement of the former high school.

The affected areas are mainly the gymnasium, elevator shaft and other downstairs areas.

Town Manager Butch Asselin said he has been advised those areas would benefit from two industrial-sized dehumidifiers. He has also been looking at possible sites and bonding the cost of a new town office, should it be needed. He has suggested a committee be formed to look at the future of the two-story building.

In another matter, Asselin said he has received design plans for the Welchville Dam project and is looking into possible funding to determine the impact of removing the dam on the Little Androscoggin River.

The board also was informed that the Thompson Lake Dam is not in immediate danger of failing, but the lower boards that regulate the flow of water are bowing and need to be replaced in the future.

The boards have not been replaced in at least 20 years.

Asselin also said a committee looking into opening up Pismo Beach to the general public is wrapping up its work and he expects to give a report to selectmen Nov. 15.

The town manager also said he will work with the Cemetery Committee to fix the historic Craigie Cemetery on King Street. Resident Sharon Jackson told selectmen at their meeting two weeks ago that the condition of the cemetery was a “disgrace.”
