Ridin’ Hard to Santa Fe (3)
By Jason Grundstrom-Whitney
all fur and claws
‘let ’em shoot me,’ I thought
saw a family in a
dumpster once
best act of fatherhood
I ever saw
kind gentle eyes
feeding his family
nothing for himself
when discovered
he was chased and beaten
as his family ran to safety
St. Survival I called him
‘hell, they even chase
their own kind
from dumpsters
might as well tempt fate,’ I thought
I jumped into the rusted
steel container
‘let ’em shoot,’ I said
to myself as I smacked loudly
on day-old honey-glazed
doughnuts.
