100 years ago: 1918

The danger from an attack of the grippe or influenza, after the acute stage, is when the lowered vitality makes the system easy prey for any diseases in which it has experienced. The disability resulting from an attack of the grippe is so persistent that if the blood is not built up and strength and restored it might last for months and years.

50 years ago: 1968

An interesting talk on toys highlighted the recent meeting of the Neighborhood Mothers Club held in the High Street Congregational Church, Auburn. Miss Claudia Files, a student at Bates College, who is working with children participating in the Head Start program, spoke to the large attendance about the importance of toys in a child’s development. She had an assortment of toys on display and gave an outline of what features to look for when purchasing a toy. Many interesting ideas were exchanged on the type of toys that children preferred.

25 years ago: 1993

Members of the Oxford Fire Department and Western Maine Detachment of the Marine Corps League of Mechanic Falls welcomed 109 blood donors Tuesday who helped boost the American Red Cross’ dwindling supply in the Northeast. The drive was organized after firefighters and others learned of the shortage created when a Newton, Mass., chemical plant exploded Oct. 25, burning nine firemen.
