DEAR SUN SPOTS: My wife Lisa and I were, and still are, overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from so many of you in the Lewiston-Auburn community for our Temple Shalom Jewish community. At our Friday, Nov. 2, Memorial for the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting, you packed our sanctuary to celebrate our Shabbat, the Sabbath, with us. You lit candles with us and sang and danced with us. You prayed with us and cried with us. You made us feel like we were not alone. You made us feel like we were all family. Clergy from every tradition stood in front of our Torah scrolls with blessings and words of brotherhood and sisterhood. Community and business leaders sat in our pews in solidarity. Educators, administrators and students from Bates College, especially the Hillel, came with hugs and love.

We were flooded with phone calls, emails, cards and letters from friends, business colleagues, and acquaintances. We are also so grateful for the Sun Journal’s thoughtful and beautiful coverage.

Perhaps most extraordinary were the posters and drawings from the Civil Rights teams of school children from Lewiston, Auburn and surrounding towns from Greene to Buckfield and beyond. “We are sorry, we support you; we are all brothers and sisters.” These letters have given us so much hope. All of our children are learning respect, appreciation, curiosity, tolerance, fellowship and yes, love, right here in our magnificent community.

On behalf of the Jewish community, we thank all of you. May we know only joyous celebration.

— Rabbi Sruli and Lisa, Temple Shalom, Lewiston

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Does anyone have pictures of Lisbon Street from around the 1960s and early 1970s when the street was decked out for the holidays and there was snow on the ground and the buses on the streets? It was such a wonderful feeling going Christmas shopping in the evening. It was like the streets, people and stores were so alive with the Christmas spirit. Even the Christmas songs could be heard from the stores.
