LEWISTON – Jacqueline M. Obie, 85, of Lewiston, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, returned to God on Dec. 4, 2018, in a peaceful death at her home, surrounded by family. She was born on May 24, 1933, the daughter of the late Alexander and Mary Jane (Pelletier) Nicolas, in Lac Frontiere, Canada and later became an American citizen.

For nine years of her young life, she lived in the orphanage with the Sisters’ of Charity, a life she appreciated and one she remembered fondly. Before her marriage, Jackie worked in resort hotels in Maine, Florida and Arizona. After raising her children, she returned to the hospitality industry and obtained an Associates Degree in Culinary Arts from Central Maine Technical College. She enjoyed her work as a cook and was employed at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center. Before obtaining her degree, she also worked as a certified nursing assistant and as a switchboard operator.

In 1956, she married (the late) Marcel Belanger and in 1972, she married (the late) Joseph Albert Obie.

She is survived by her six children and their families, Susan Belanger, Marc and Debora Belanger, Diane and Richard Dubois, Therese and Denis St. Pierre, Denise and Kenneth Chow, and Tammy Obie and Kim Wood; her eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by son-in-law, John Schwarz, husband of Susan. She often said her greatest blessing was her family. She was predeceased by her brother, Dennis Nicolas, sisters, Evelyn Mansir Allen Andrews and Angeline Gaudette. She is survived by one brother, Daniel (and Naomi) Nicolas; as well as many nieces and nephews that loved her dearly.

She was a devout traditional Catholic and was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Oakland Maine. Her faith was the most important aspect of her life, and at the time of her death, she was ready to return to her Heavenly Father.

Visitation will be held at the Albert & Burpee Funeral Home on Thursday, 6-8 p.m. Services will be Friday, 2 p.m., at St. Theresa’s Church, 35 Church Street, Oakland. Interment in the spring, Mt. Hope Cemetery. Condolences, donations, and a video tribute may be found online at www.albert-burpee.com.
