100 years ago: 1918

The Men’s Brotherhood of the United Baptist Church of Lewiston will hold its first supper and social hour Monday at 6:30 p.m. Prof. Grose of Bates College will be the speaker. Orchestral music will be furnished during the supper. The occasion is open to the church and parish.

50 years ago: 1968

Lewiston-Auburn area children were given an introduction to the world of symphonic music today as a youth concert was presented at the armory by the Portland Symphony Orchestra. The players were seated in the center of the auditorium, with the children seated around, giving the youngsters a better opportunity to see the players and conductor in action. The audience was surprisingly very receptive and, judging from extensive applause, enjoyed the selections. The concert was concluded with a sing-along arrangement of favorite Christmas carols.

25 years ago: 1993

A “Bucket Brigade” is currently being held to raise funds for the new YWCA community pool project and, among those placing the colorful buckets in over 250 stores in the Lewiston-Auburn area are Nancy Cote, who is chairwoman of the brigade, Karen Choate, Margaret Nichols, Deborah Keefe and Rita Dube. An additional 25 volunteers will be distributing the buckets, which are labeled “A drop in the bucket will help fill the pool.” The buckets have been donated by Cote’s Ice Cream. Construction of the pool is currently underway and an additional $350,000 is needed to cover the costs of the project.
