DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m an AmeriCorps member based in Lewiston and working for Maine Campus Compact, specifically the Maine Partnership for Environmental Stewardship. Our main objective is to foster partnerships between college campuses and their communities to increase energy efficiency and cost savings, especially for our vulnerable, low-income neighbors. We do this by providing light weatherization services, such as window inserts, and organizing several educational opportunities, such as energy education events, green certification audits and training programs to get people’s careers started in the green energy industry.

I’m looking for people to join AmeriCorps as part-time members based in Lewiston to engage in topics related to energy usage and how energy efficiency can serve the community by helping save money on bills and how the community can work together to combat climate change. These community members would serve as “Energy Efficiency Residential Consultants” to help inform, organize and recruit for the environmental campaigns and events in the area.

It’s vital for the committee to be representative of the community it serves, which is why I’m reaching out to those who live in the area. The first area of focus for the Resident Consultants will be to work on a needs-based assessment to learn what issues are most important to the community and to inform us as to where our efforts our most needed.

No environmental experience is necessary. If you want your voice to be heard and give back to the community, this is the perfect opportunity. With our planet so close to the tipping point for catastrophic irreversible climate change, now is the time to get involved. This is your opportunity to do your part to help your neighbor and to save the planet!
