WELD — Elections for a selectman and a Planning Board member will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in the multipurpose room of the Town Office.

Selectman Richard Doughty is running unopposed for another three-year term, while Tom Wheeler is seeking re-election to the Planning Board.

The annual town meeting will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Town Hall where voters will be asked to approve a $610,294 budget. That’s $5,043 more than last year.

Selectman Tom Skolfield said much of the the increase comes from salaries.

“The Budget Committee looked at pay scales of neighboring towns,” he said. “We were a bit behind the curve in some areas.”

The general government account is some $72,000 less for 2019 because the town no longer leases the Town Office/post office complex roof and parking lot repairs are completed.

“The mortgage has been paid off, we own it now,” Skolfield said.

“We want to continue to upgrade our buildings,” he said. “There is $18,000 in Building Capital Improvement to have for all town buildings.”

Separate from the Fire Department/public safety budget article is one asking to purchase an emergency generator with automatic start, which the Fire Department wants.

“We put it as a separate article so people could talk bout it,” Skolfield said.

“If the power goes out for too long a time, there are electric garage doors, heating … that a generator could run,” he said. “The propane generator would cost about $8,000.”

Voters will also be asked to approve increasing the property tax limit of $306,657, if the budget exceeds what state law allows.

Skolfield said the proposed budget will probably require that approval, as budgets have for several years.

This year’s town report is dedicated to Bernard D. Rackliffe Sr. who moved to Weld in 1967. He has been the road commissioner and served on the Finance and Truck committees. He has been a Fire Department volunteer and is a member of the Budget Committee.
