The spire is lifted into place on top of the West Auburn Congregational Church in Auburn on Tuesday. The steeple, bell and bell housing on Lewiston-Auburn’s oldest church was put back in place after undergoing a yearlong restoration. Mike O’Connor, of O’Connor Construction, and Preservation Timber Framing worked together to repair the bell and build a replica of the old spire that was removed Sept. 19, 2018. The hemlock timbers used in construction of the spire were cut and milled in Auburn, said church member Dianne O’Connor. A grant from the Maine Steeple Foundation and money raised from church members and people who live in the neighborhood paid for the project. Daryn Slover/Sun Journal Buy this Photo
