Roxbury ATV Riders to open new trail

ROXBURY — The Roxbury ATV Riders will open a new trail on Saturday, July 11. The trail starts at the Roxbury ATV Riders Park & Ride off Rte. 120W and ends at the Beliveau Road in Rumford.

A little over three years ago, a landowner shut down a trail for logging in Byron then closed it for good. This was the only way to connect to Rumford/Mexico trails. The search began for a new trail and members found a way with the help of five landowners: Scott Coley, Jessie Chisholm, Frank Coyne, Bob Linkletter and A&B Forestry.
Money for the trail came from memberships, a Maine Municipal Grant and a Polaris Trail Grant for $10,000.
During the three-year project, the project had to stop due to heavy rains in September and October of the second year, and in the third year, four bridges, culverts, ditching, water bars and signing took place. Special signs were made for each end of the trail, recognizing the Roxbury ATV Riders and Polaris.
Riders will be able to travel from Roxbury to Rumford, Woodstock, Peru, Dixfield, Carthage and Mexico. From Rumford, they can ride to the Windtowers, Silverlake Campground, Andover, Lone Mountain Campground, Mills Market, Devil’s Den, Byron, Coos Canyon Campground, Coos Canyon Rock & Gift, Angel Falls and Oquossoc ATV Club trails and  northern clubs. Donations are being taken to help maintain the trail.
