Dennis Connelly of Auburn pulls string beans Tuesday from the raised-bed gardens at the PAL Center in Auburn. Connelly is a Maine Master Gardener volunteer with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension and works in the gardens two to three times a week with the PAL Center youth during a typical summer. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the center has been shut down, but Connelly kept up with the gardens and takes the harvest to the Auburn Senior Community Center for the “Grab ‘N Go” program. Connelly said about 50 pounds of rhubarb, 45 pounds of string beans and 15 pounds of raspberries have been picked from the gardens to help families stay fed during the pandemic.
