Governor Baxter yesterday issued a proclamation designating Friday, April 8 as Bird Day. He requests that all teachers of the public schools and the people generally shall observe the same with appropriate exercise that a better understanding may be had of bird-life.

50 Years Ago: 1971

Gov. Angus King visited and talked with three fourth-grade classes at Holy Cross School in Lewiston recently. After his presentation, students were given the opportunity to question King on government and his personal life. King was presented with a Catholic schools sweatshirt by principal Patricia Berthiaume.

25 Years Ago: 1996

Remicca Levesque, daughter of Michael and Ruby Levesque, of Winter St., Auburn has been selected as an official entrant in the state finals of the Miss Maine USA Pageant to be held at the Grand Ballroom of the Sheraton Tara Hotel in South Portland. The state pageant will select the Maine representative to the Miss USA Pageant, which is nationally televised live over CBS each February. The Miss USA Pageant is staged by Miss Universe Inc. Levesque, who was selected as an entrant-at large, will compete with girls from all over the Pine Tree state for the title of Miss Maine. She is a graduate of Edward Little High and is now at Central Maine Technical Center as a secretary. She also works full time at Lafayette and LeBlanc Insurance.
