WELLS – Jane Chin, 91, passed away peacefully on Feb. 16, 2021 in Wells.

She was born to Sea Wah and Suey Doo (Leong) Eng in Chonglou, Guandong Province in China in the year of the sheep. Her given name was Eng Chung Sin which means “new beginning”.

Her education included classic Cantonese and calligraphy. She was a survivor of the Sino-Japanese Wars and World War II. In 1948 she married Robert Chin in Hong Kong and they returned to his home in Lewiston. She embraced her new life as an American and took great pride in learning to speak English and to cook including many Franco-American dishes.

She worked in the family business of The Nanking Restaurant and Hotel on Park Street until it closed in 1974. She was then employed by RCA, the Ramada Inn and Tambrands from which she retired in 1991.

She loved knitting, sewing, quilting, oil painting, baking and world traveling. She and Robert had many adventures which she loved to recall; she was a wonderful storyteller. Jane excelled at both vegetable and flower gardening. Her large peony bed was an attraction in her neighborhood every summer.

Thanks to the staff at Avita of Wells, Jane was able to continue her hobbies, particularly gardening, knitting, and painting all the way to the end of her life. She must have made hats and scarves for everyone! But her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially attending reunions both in the U.S. and in China.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Robert; and one son, Donald Chin.

She is survived by her son, Philip Chin and wife Stefanie (Bailey) of Portland, grandchildren, Ashley, Alexander, and Garrett; her son, Dennis and wife Lauren (Horning) of Poway, Calif., grandchildren Brian and Miranda; her daughter, Pamela (Skye) Chin and husband Thomas Gaudette of Hudson, Mass., grandchildren, Emily, Amanda, Nadia, and Kyra; and Donald’s children, Tracie Clemmer and Travis Chin; 13 great-grandchildren; her sister, Jon Yu Chin of Staten Island, N.Y.; many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Her family wishes to thank the hospice care team at Compassus for making her final hours peaceful. A viewing will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Albert and Burpee Funeral Home, 253 Pine St., Lewiston. A memorial service will be planned for later in the spring.
