For the second straight summer the Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic will not be held because of concerns related to the coronavirus pandemic.
The high school senior all-star football game, organized by the Kora Shrine, annually raises over $100,000 for Shriner’s Hospitals. It had been tentatively set for July 10 at Thornton Academy. Maine was one of the few states to not have any tackle football season in the 2020-21 school year.
Organizers had received recommendations of which seniors should be involved from the state’s high school coaches. Dan O’Connell, the athletic director and football coach at John Bapst and a volunteer with the Lobster Bowl, said the game’s board of directors are intent on honoring selected players and are exploring ways to hold some form of competition. Possible plans include holding 7-on-7 flag football games for the skill players and strength and conditioning competitions for linemen.
