Dumping sawdust in front of the Norway Post Office.

A race starts from Danforth St. The tallest building on the left is now The Dragon’s Lair.

If you wanted to have snowshoe races, but didn’t have any snow, what would you do? In January 1949, Norway planned a winter festival on Main St.  Because there was so little snow, the event made the national news when many truckloads of sawdust were dumped on the street in order to run snowshoe races.  Snowshoe clubs from the northeast and even from Canada competed in the events. Members of clubs from Lewiston walked to Norway to participate. After the festival in Norway, a couple Lewiston competitors continued their journey, walking to Montreal. That’s about 210 miles. Would you try that today?
