100 Years Ago: 1921
Will baseball games and all other forms of athletic competition likely to evoke applause be forbidden on the Lewiston Athletic park? Daylight Saving and twilight baseball have brought up a problem that the Committee on the Athletic Park will have to settle in a few days. Baseball can now be played until 8:30 and some evenings later. The complaints are from St. Mary’s hospital, which puts its patients to bed at 8 o’clock. The hospital authorities assert that any event at the park after 8 o’clock is a source of disturbance. Complaint was made that on Tuesday night, the applause from the same disturbed patients in the hospital.
50 Years Ago: 1971
The 40th reunion of the Class of 1931 at Edward Little High School was held at Martindale Country Club on Saturday with 88 persons in attendance. The 55 classmates present represented more than half of those in the class whose addresses are known locally. Four members of the high school staff in 1931 were honored guests at the reunion. Miss Jessie Alley, Miss Margaret Jordan, Mrs. Elizabeth Packard and Miss Helen MacFarland were introduced by Toastmaster Glen Torrey who quoted from the 1931 ‘’Oracle’’ yearbook in presenting each guest. Deceased members of the class were remembered in a prayer conducted by Raymond Magno of Farmington. Alice Wood Lang of Auburn distributed a newsletter she had prepared. Her 19-page letter contained up to date information.
25 Years Ago: 1996
The American Association of Retired Persons Local 8 Chapter 4077 will sponsor a model railroad demonstration and exhibit Monday at 1:15 p.m. at the Multi-Purpose Center. Paul Lodge, a member of the Great Falls Model Railroad Club, will demonstrate many of the aspects of model railroading. including creating landscapes such as trees, water and land. He will also exhibit methods of building items from scratch to depict an actual landmark. A video of the Silver Bullet Express ski train of the St. Lawrence and Atlantic will be available for viewing. Lodge. an active member of the railroad club, participates in the Androscoggin Sheriff’s Department DARE program. He and the club have shared their projects at the balloon festival, the Festival for Children, nursing homes, schools and hospitals.
