Maine dedicated its new $4.8 million cultural building Wednesday. Gov. Curtis said it would provide Maine people with an understanding of the state’s heritage. “Our future rests on the foundation of the past.”’ he said. “Without an understanding of the past — both its achievements and failures — we cannot plan effectively for the future.”  Several hundred people were there for the opening. They listened to speeches for nearly an hour, then wandered through the massive structure which will house the state library, museum and archives. Up until now, these agencies have been headquartered in the State House, just across a parking lot from the new building. The structure, with more than 142,000 square feet of space, was nearly five years in planning and construction, and was designed by a New York architect, Walker 0. Cain and Associates. “Here is the state’s heart beat,” — the essential records, the literature and the artifacts forming the vital source of knowledge that is the life-blood of our great state.
