Lawrence “Larry” Shover

SOUTH PARIS – Mr. Lawrence “Larry” Shover, 83, died Friday June 11, 2021, at the Maine Veterans Home in South Paris. He was a longtime resident of Mexico, Maine.

Larry was a born April 21, 1938, on a dairy farm in Irasburg, Vt., the son of Clarence and Esther Shover. He was a graduate of Stephens High School in Rumford class of 1956. Larry enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1956 and was separated from active duty as a Captain in 1972. In 1979 he joined the National Guard and was promoted to Staff Sergeant before retiring in 1979.

Larry’s other career that brought him much pride was his 35 years with the Mexico Fire Deptment from 1978 to 2013. While with the Mexico Fire Dept., he received several certifications; Firefighter One, Maine State Firefighter Instructor and was also the Mexico Fire Dept. Instructor. He became Captain of Hose Company Two in 1988. He was president of the Mexico Fireman’s Relief Assoc. in 1993 and received Firefighter of the Year. Larry was also a longtime member and Past President of the Western Maine Fireman’s Assoc. He was a long-time member of the Maine State Federation of Firefighters and in 2019 he received the honor of being Grand Marshal of the 56th Annual Convention. Many will also remember Larry as Santa Claus for the annual Mexico Fire Dept., Christmas parade which he did for 25-plus years.

Larry was involved in many local organizations such as the American Legion, VFW, Snowshoe Club, Blazing Star Lodge for 50 years where he served as Past Master, and the Shriners Club for over 40 years. He worked for Boise Cascade Paper Mill in Rumford.

Larry was married in 1962 to Judy Sinclair who survives of Rumford. Other survivors include his daughter, Laurie Shover of Mexico, grandchildren, Benjamin Cross and wife Abbey, Zachary Cross, Chelsea Vattes, Christa Vattes, Kyle Shover, Addam Blodgett-Shover; great-grandchildren, Cole, Adaline and Lincoln, brothers, Richard Shover and wife Patricia, Pearly Shover and wife Shirley and a sister, Rachel Leckey and husband Jim, son-in-law, Richard Blodgett, a very special four-legged friend, Jacob.

He was predeceased by his parents, and two daughters, Kathy Shover-Vattes and Debbie Shover.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, at the Meader and Son Funeral Home, 3 Franklin St., Rumford. Interment will be in the Farrington Morton Cemetery in Mexico. Friends and family are invited to call at the funeral home 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., prior to the service.
