WATERVILLE — Two women were injured this week on Interstate 95 when the SUV they were traveling in struck another vehicle, rolled over multiple times and came to rest on its side in the median.
Joanne Raymond, 59, and her passenger, Hildred Lecours, 77, both of Stratton, had to be extricated from a 2017 Toyota Rav4, which was traveling southbound, according to a statement from Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
The crash occurred around 3 p.m. Wednesday near mile marker 127 when the Toyota, moving in the travel lane, “turned into the passing lane to go around a vehicle that was pulled over in the breakdown lane,” according to the statement.
“When Raymond turned her vehicle into the passing lane, she struck a white 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan being operated by Joah Juarez, 29, from Augusta,” the statement said. “Raymond’s vehicle struck the front passenger’s side of Juarez’s vehicle, causing Raymond’s vehicle to spin out of control, slide toward the median, and then rolling over multiple times before coming to rest in the median. Juarez’s vehicle was forced off the road by the impact and was able to stop in the shoulder of the median.”
Maine State Police, the Waterville Fire Department and Delta Ambulance responded to the crash. Raymond and Lecours were taken to Inland Hospital for treatment of their injuries, according to the statement.
“As a reminder to the public, the breakdown lane on the interstate is for emergency use only and disabled vehicles,” it said.
An Inland spokesperson said Thursday evening that Lecours was treated and released from the hospital and Raymond was transferred to another medical facility.
