John Elliott Freeman

MEXICO – John Elliott Freeman, 92, longterm resident of Byron, recently moved to Mexico, died at home surrounded by family on Sept. 9, 2021. He was born on Feb. 12, 1929, in Rumford, son of Walter Otis and Grace (Elliott) Freeman. He attended Stephens High School and served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Fargo. He married Hattie Hodgson on June 3, 1950. John served several years as Selectman of Byron, volunteer fire department, and on the school board. John retired from “the Mill”. He was a member of Parish of the Holy Savior Church. John was an avid sports fan and huge supporter of all his kids’, grandkids’, and great grandkids’ teams.

He is survived by his wife; eight children: Linda (Doug) Doerr, Susan (Russ) Hayden, Judy Freeman, Cynthia Freeman, Walter Freeman, Diane (d. Mike) Sandusky, John Freeman, and Melody Sanborn; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Gertrude Martin and Anna Shaw. He was predeceased by his infant son, “Baby Boy”; his parents; his brother, Philip; and his great-granddaughter, Brook Freeman.

Visitation Thibault Funeral Home Wednesday Sept. 15, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Sept. 16, at 10 a.m., at Parish of the Holy Savior Church, Rumford.

Burial with Military Honors will be held at a later date at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery Civic Center Dr. Augusta.
