SABATTUS — Police arrested a suspect Monday in a hit-and-run incident that killed a 28-year-old local woman walking Sunday on Bowdoinham Road, according to acting Police Chief Daniel Davies.

According to the Androscoggin County Jail’s booking log, Sabattus police arrested David Veinott, 37, of 743 Post Road in Bowdoinham at 2:45 p.m. and charged him with leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death.

The arrest took place at 190 Middle Road in Sabattus, which is the police station.

Veinott posted $560 cash bail and was released from the Auburn jail.

Police did not return an email Monday night from the Sun Journal seeking confirmation that Veinott was the person they had arrested in connection with the hit-and-run case involving Renata Schalk of Sabattus.

Police said they located a black, late-model Dodge Ram 1500 crew cab pickup truck with chrome rims in Lewiston on Monday morning.

The truck police were seeking was last seen Sunday leaving the scene of the crash westbound toward Middle Road. An image of the truck was captured on home security footage. The vehicle sustained heavy damage to its front end, according to police.

“Due to the evolving nature of this investigation, I cannot make any further comments at this time,” Davies wrote Monday.

He said the case has been turned over to the Androscoggin County District Attorney’s Office.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office and the Maine State Police assisted in the case, and state police are handling the crash reconstruction.

According to the Bicycle Coalition of Maine, this was the state’s 14th pedestrian fatality this year. Twelve pedestrians were killed on Maine roadways in all of 2020.

Anyone with information about the collision should contact Sgt. Michael Chaine with the Sabattus Police Department at mchaine@sabattus.org or 207-375-6952.
