To the Editor:
Bethel’s American Legion Post 81 will be holding a ceremony for the “Dignified Disposal of Unserviceable Flags” on Tuesday, October 12 at 5 p.m. in the parking lot of the Legion building, located at 85 Vernon Street in Bethel.
Members of the community are invited to bring their faded, worn out, or otherwise unserviceable American flags to Post 81 on October 12 and stay for the ceremony.
Ahead of that date, people can deposit their worn-out flags in a marked container just inside the carport at my home at 32 Mechanic Street during daylight hours.
The ceremony itself will be short with simple formality. It ends with the burning of unserviceable American flags.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
