Debra Cote

JAY – Debra Cote, 61, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2021, at her home in Jay. Deb was born Feb. 15, 1960, in Albany, N.Y. to Lois Higby Milstead and Century Allen Milstead Jr.

She grew up in Cape Cod, Mass. and spent much of her childhood riding and showing horses. Her love for horses never faded even though she no longer rode. She would often say “I just love the smell of a barn”.

Deb always enjoyed riding motorcycles with her husband and feeling the wind in her hair. She was known for making others laugh with her twisted sense of humor and saying it how it was. Deb always loved her visits to the ocean and smell of the salty air. She was an amazingly talented crafter, from braiding rugs, crocheting afghans, her trusty potholders, scarves, and hats to keep us all warm, and her signature booties that we all love so much. In recent years she crocheted her grandson’s whole class booties, as well as hats and scarves that she donated to the local food pantry.

Deb truly enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren shopping, at camp or just making us all laugh.

Deb was predeceased by her mother, father; and sister, Dana. She is survived by her loving husband of 30 years Warren Cote Jr. of Jay; and her five children, Patrick Hutchings and husband Jack Hill of Sarasota, Fla., Lindsey Hutchings of Stockton Springs, Quincey Hutchings of Jay, Lacey Cote of Bethel, and Tracey Cote of Jay. She also left behind three grandchildren, Tanner Hanson, Emily Danforth, and Jamison Long. She will be missed by many, we find comfort knowing she is now riding her horse, sipping unsweetened iced tea, eating all the lobster, chocolate, and black licorice she wants.
