Eugene W. Archibald

RUMFORD – Eugene W. Archibald, 88, passed away on Tuesday Nov. 16, 2021 at Rumford Hospital after a brief stay. Known by many as Archie, he was born Oct. 31, 1933, in Rumford and has lived in Rumford area his whole life. Eugene was the son of Grace and Wendall Archibald, he was a 1952 graduate of Mexico High School. Eugene served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 – 1956 during the Korean War. He was employed for 25 years at Oxford Paper Company as an electrician and was also President of Local IBEW for a few years, before retiring to run his own business full time.
From 1976-1995 he owned and operated a pool company and was one of the first people in the area to install pools. He also sold hardware and chain saws. In the early ‘70s he started the family business Archies and business grew and was incorporated in 1976. He retired in 1995, leaving his three children to carry on the businesses. He was a very giving family man and was always willing to share his opinion with any one whether they wanted to hear it or not.
Eugene was a longtime member of the local Masonic Lodge and the American Legion. After retiring he enjoyed travel, summers at the Lake in Weld and keeping the family in line. He was the patriarch of the Archibald family.
Eugene was married in Dixfield, on July 7, 1956, to Celia Cochran who survives of Rumford. Other survivors include a son, Alan and wife Cindy of Mexico, a daughter, Jean Holmquist and husband Bruce of Peru, a daughter-in-law, Janine Archibald of Dixfield, grandchildren Brandon, Justin, Brett, Crystal, Eric, Nathan, Staci, Michelle and Michael. He was predeceased by a son, Scott Archibald.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday Nov. 19, 2021 from 4-7 p.m., at the Meader & Son Funeral Home, 3 Franklin St., Rumford. A graveside service will be held 10 a.m., Saturday Nov. 20, 2021 at the Greenwood Cemetery in Dixfield.
