DEAR SUN SPOTS: I lost a pair of reading glasses on Jan. 4, either in BJ’s or in the parking lot in Auburn. If anyone finds them, please call 897-5458 and leave a message so I can come pick them up. Thank you, Sun Spots, for what you do. — Tim, Fayette

ANSWER: I hope someone  turned them in to the store’s customer service counter. Sometimes it’s good to call more than once to follow up.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Regarding the recommendations about shopping for glasses online (Dec. 27 Sun Spots), I have had wonderful service from eyebuydirect.com. I have purchased two pairs of progressive lens glasses, one pair was sunglasses and another pair had corrective lenses with prisms. My husband also purchased bifocals. The frames are very nice quality and the prices were great. — No name, no town

DEAR SUN SPOTS: First, let me tell you how much we enjoy your column. My sisters and friends look forward to it every day and miss it on the weekend but we’re glad you have the weekends off.

I’m replying to Alicia’s request for a reliable mechanic with Subaru experience.

I’d like to recommend a mechanic in Lewiston who has several years of experience working on Subarus and other vehicles.

He can be reached at 212-2882 . Please leave a message if there’s no answer as he might be busy working. He will get back to you.

ANSWER: Excellent! So many people depend on these recommendations from readers. I’m very happy to pass the word!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: What kind of outdoor group activities are going on in Androscoggin County? I would like to get out and meet new people but want to limit my time in indoor public settings due to the pandemic. I am especially interested in volunteer opportunities. — No name, no town

ANSWER: For volunteer opportunities, check out 211 Maine. Simply call 211 or visit the website (https://211maine.org/) where you’ll find listings of nonprofits you can contact and talk with to see if your interests and schedule match their needs.

Other ideas that come to mind include contacting Lewiston and Auburn’s Recreation Departments to see if they have any outdoor opportunities such as monitoring skating rinks or sledding hills, working with a group to groom trails or pick up litter at parks.

How about being a Big Sister to a young girl who could use a friend and mentor? It’s not necessarily a group activity but you could meet up with other Big Sisters and their charges for a fun day of skating, sledding, hiking, or just having hot chocolate together and enjoying a wintry view. Contact Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid-Maine Androscoggin (https://www.bbbsmidmaine.org/, 653-3857).

Do you like to drive? Delivering books or meals to those who are housebound is needed. Lewiston Housing Authority (https://lewistonhousing.org/) is looking for volunteer delivery drivers. For book delivery opportunities, contact the library in your community.

If you like birds and animals, contact the Audubon Society in Falmouth (https://maineaudubon.org/) to check out what you can help with, or contact a local animal shelter to see if they need dog walkers.

This isn’t a volunteer idea but have you heard of Meet-up (https://www.meetup.com/cities/us/me/lewiston/)? There are many opportunities tuned to many different interests. Check it out!
