PERU — Lynda Hebert has resigned from the Board of Selectmen, effective at the town meeting June 14.

“I’ve been contemplating this for sometime,” Hebert said at the March 7 board meeting. “Due to family matters and my work schedule I’m not able to dedicate the time needed to serve the citizens of Peru in the manner that they deserve.”

She said stepping down now would allow voters to elect her successor in June.

“It’s been a pleasure to serve the Peru citizens for the last four years,” she said.

Hebert was elected to a three-year term and will have completed the first year of her second term in June. Her resignation leave a two-year opening.

A week earlier, Chairwoman Tammi Lyons announced her resignation, saying she could not commit to weekly board meetings. There is one year left on her term.

Last fall, then-Chairwoman Raquel Welch-Day resigned. At the time, she had been serving as Mexico town manager since June 2020. Her seat on the board is for three years.

The other members of the board are Gail Belyea and James Dolloff.

Town Clerk Debbie Coudrain said nomination papers for offices are available and must be returned to her office by 5 p.m. April 15. She said they require at least 25 and no more than 100 valid signatures.

Open positions include: three selectmen for one-, two- and three-year seats; two directors for Regional School Unit 56 for two- and three-year seats; and a fire chief for one year. Fire Chief Bill Hussey is retiring after serving two years.

“Even in they only want to try a position, they can go for the ones that only have a year or two,” Coudrain said. “The school board is really important because we’ve been down one member for quite some time.

“We need some younger people who have children in school. They need to step up and do some of this stuff,” she said.

The Town Office is open from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
