Erin Grizone, owner and founder of the Good Health is a Habit Wellness Studio in Waterford, plans to offer a free Introduction to Somatic Movement.

The event is scheduled for 1-3 p.m. Friday, March 25, at the Cancer Resource Center of Western Maine, 59 Winter St. in Norway.

Grizone is an Essential Somatics Movement teacher, yoga instructor, and ACE-certified fitness trainer and behavior change specialist, according to a news release from the center.

A somatic movement practice is a way for cancer patients and survivors to manage their ability to move as freely and pain-free as possible, help with chronic pain, and help individuals find more ease in any and all daily movements like walking, running, reaching up, bending down, twisting and lifting.

“I help clients create and maintain a daily movement practice to reduce/eliminate chronic pain and movement restrictions,” said Grizone. “In somatic movement philosophy, an individual is seen as a ‘soma’ whose physical, mental and emotional selves influence one another. A cancer survivor, for example, may experience chronic muscle tension (the physical self) as a result of an invasive surgery (physical) or because of the anxiety/fear triggered by the situation (the mental/emotional self).”

This introductory class is open to anyone impacted by cancer; masks are required.
