The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society is accepting registrations for people and their canine friends to walk in the Strutt your Mutt or run in the Dash for Dogs 5K on Sunday, May 1.

Both events will take place at the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with the timed run and walk (not timed) starting at 9 a.m. Preregistration for both events is $30 in advance or $35 on-site the day of the event.

Money raised from this day stays in our community and directly benefits the homeless, abandoned and abused animals at the Humane Society for their food, shelter, veterinary care and a chance at a new home.

This is a casual “people” run/walk along the Androscoggin Riverside Trail. Dogs are welcome, but you can also participate without one.

Participating as a team through your business or with your friends is also encouraged. Dogs must be leashed on leads no longer that 6 feet and no retractable leashes are allowed. Your pet must also have a current rabies vaccination. Also, please don’t bring your dog if she is in heat. Sign-up information is available at the shelter or online at www.SavingPetsInMaine.org. – Katie,  executive director, Greater Androscoggin Humane Society, Lewiston

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Friday, June 24 is an important day for Francophones and Quebec as it is St. John the Baptist Day or Fête de la Saint-Jean-Baptiste. France was one of the first countries to celebrate this holiday, and this tradition followed the first settlers in Canada. As explained in the Jesuit Relations, the first celebration took place on the banks of the St. Lawrence River on the evening of June 23, 1636, with a bonfire and five cannon shots. This festival became an integral part of French-Canadian culture.

The Franco Center is seeking photos and artifacts of St. Jean Baptist parades and celebrations held in Lewiston-Auburn as far back as they have been celebrated. We will display these items at the Franco Center. For more information, call 333-3251 or email dscammon@francocenter.org. — Denise, marketing/development director, Gendron Franco Center, Lewiston
