A cobbler tells the Lewiston Journal that business wasn’t very good last winter. ‘“There was so much snow that rubbers were worn constantly” he sald, “and that meant that people were not so particular about the taps on their shoes.” Business is beginning to pick up now,” he said.
50 Years Ago: 1972
Not one, but two persons attempted to claim the pet crow picked up Thursday by Auburn police. The bird, found in the Nottingham Road area, Thursday morning was taken to headquarters. The Journal carried the story and, at about 5:45 pm, a South Paris person, who said she had seen the article called police and said she believed the bird was hers. She said she would pick up the pet on Friday. About 15 minutes later, a Merrow Road resident appeared at headquarters and said the bird was hers. She referred to the pet as “Joe Crow” and went out to the garage to confer with the feathered one. Police were satisfied the crow belonged to her and she got it.
25 Years Ago: 1997
Poland honors Santa service. Poland Town Manager Richard Chick and Pat Beausang, Santa Comes to Poland Committee press person, recently placed a committee plaque on a town office wall. The plaque. named for the committee’s first Santa, the late LeRoy Frank, annually honors a citizen dedicated to “above and beyond” service. The current Santa, Frank Strout, is the 1996 recipient. Previous names on the plaque are Hartwell Pratt, Ken White, Michael J. Ward and Jayne Ray.
