Mainers can register for Healthy Living for ME’s free spring and summer workshops, which begin in May.

The workshops are designed to help Mainers prevent or manage a number of health conditions while aiming to improve individuals’ overall wellness. There are workshops available online, in person, and by phone, according to a news release from the health network.

Mainers who are caregivers or supports for individuals living with conditions addressed in these workshops are also invited to participate.

The schedule and details for May workshops is as follows:

• Living Well with Diabetes — This workshop is conducted virtually and begins Tuesday, May 3. It is designed to help people with type 2 diabetes by covering topics such as: dealing with diabetes symptoms, fatigue, pain, hyper/hypoglycemia, stress, depression, anger, fear, frustration, appropriate exercise, healthy eating, appropriate use of medication and working with healthcare providers. This workshop is provided in partnership with MaineGeneral’s Peter Alfond Prevention & Healthy Living Center.

• A Matter of Balance — This workshop will be held at the Education Center at SeniorsPlus at 8 Falcon Road in Lewiston and begins Tuesday, May 3. The class emphasizes practical strategies to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels.

• Living Well for Better Health — This workshop will be held at the Northern Light Sebasticook Valley Hospital Campus at 447 N Main St. in Pittsfield and begins Tuesday, May 10. The workshop helps participants deal with ongoing conditions such as diabetes, COPD, arthritis, and high blood pressure. Topics covered include: handling frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation; appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance; appropriate use of medications; communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals; nutrition; and evaluating new treatments.

• Living Well with Chronic Pain — This workshop will be held online and begins Tuesday, May 10. This workshop is designed for people who are dealing with persistent pain such as back pain, post-surgical pain, headaches, and other ongoing pain. Topics covered include: dealing with frustration, fatigue, isolation, and poor sleep; appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength; appropriate use of medications; communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals; nutrition; pacing activity and rest; and evaluating new treatments. This workshop is provided in partnership with SeniorsPlus.

• Living Well for Better Health — There will be two of these workshops offered online. One will begin Thursday, May 12, and a second will begin Monday, May 16. The workshop helps participants deal with ongoing conditions such as diabetes, COPD, arthritis, and high blood pressure. Topics covered include: handling frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation; appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance; appropriate use of medications; communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals; nutrition; and evaluating new treatments. These workshops are being provided in partnership with Northern Light Sebasticook Valley Hospital and Eastport Health Care.

• Better Health Now with Diabetes — This by-phone workshop is designed for those who have diabetes or at risk of developing diabetes and/or their caregivers. It is scheduled to begin Tuesday, May 24. Participants in this workshop receive a toolkit in the mail and work with a leader either by themselves or in small groups. Topics covered include techniques to deal with the symptoms of diabetes, fatigue, pain, hyper/hypoglycemia, stress, depression, anger, fear and frustration; appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength and endurance; healthy eating, appropriate use of medication; and working with healthcare providers. This workshop is provided in partnership with MaineGeneral’s Peter Alfond Prevention and Healthy Living Center.

For virtual workshops, participants who do not have the necessary technology may be eligible to borrow an iPad from Healthy Living for ME in order to participate.

Healthy Living for ME also welcomes referrals from healthcare providers. Its evidence-based programming can help patients manage and prevent conditions before they become more serious or result in emergency situations.
