DEAR SUN SPOTS: I saw a request for a bird bath in the May 26 Sun Spots. The person requesting one can go to Hobby Lobby in Auburn to buy one at 50% off. When entering the store, go directly left past the cards and registers and they will be displayed on the wall. — No name, Auburn

ANSWER: Thanks for that tip! You can also use any shallow vessel for a birdbath. Just keep it clean and filled with fresh water (change it every other day or so) and you will have some very happy feathered friends to watch and listen to!

It is recommended to use a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to nine parts water to scrub the birdbath. Be sure to rinse it thoroughly.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: This is in reply to Alice (May 26 Sun Spots). I purchased a window mount, with suction cup, hummingbird feeder at Reny’s in Windham. They are called Audubon Window Mount Hummingbird Feeder (12-ounce nectar capacity). The price is about $8.

Skillin’s Greenhouse in Falmouth also sells the same item. The “flowers” on this feeder are white, not the common yellow. I read once that bees are not as attracted to white as they are to yellow. Over the years I have had feeders with both yellow and white “flowers.” I have never had a bee problem with the white “flower” feeders. This window mount feeder works great and the hummingbirds are drinking from it constantly. I hope this information helps. — David, Poland Spring

ANSWER: Thanks for this information, David! After reading your letter, I went right out and got some of these feeders for my hummingbirds.
