DURHAM — A stove-top grease fire spread to curtains and into the wall of a home Sunday evening, authorities said.
Fire Chief Robert Tripp said Monday that firefighters responded to a reported structure fire at 117 Cedar Pond Road at about 5:11 p.m.
The occupant of the home had tried unsuccessfully to put out the fire with a garden hose, then called 911.
The occupant and a pet were able to escape unharmed as 16 local firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control, Tripp said.
The small building was not habitable after the blaze was extinguished, but it was not the occupant’s primary residence, Tripp said.
Damage to the kitchen and interior wall was estimated at between $3,000, and $5,000, Tripp said.
Firefighters from Lisbon and Pownal departments assisted.
Tripp said residents should avoid having combustible materials near a cooking area and that grease fires should be brought under control with a cookware lid or dry chemical extinguisher.
