WILTON — Taylor Thyng has opened Bakin’ Up Maine at 5 Tyler Street.

“I love to bake, try new recipes,” she said in an interview Tuesday, July 19. “I just figured why not give it a shot. I am home all the time. I have three little ones, I have been home with them for a while. My youngest is going to go to kindergarten, that was a big push.”

Thyng said her children are great taste testers. “They love to be involved,” she said. “I hope one day they will want to do [baking].”

Thyng brainstormed to come up with a name for her business. She said she wanted something with Maine in it.

Thyng obtained her license in May and has been selling ever since. She said it took about three months to get licensed, make sure everything was in order.

“The Town of Wilton was great,” she said. “Getting those permits didn’t take very long. Everyone has been very helpful, answering my questions.

“It has been a few months now and it took off a little bit faster than I expected. I typically have calls for birthday cakes, cupcakes.”

Thyng will have a booth at the Wilton Blueberry Festival where she will sell cupcakes and cake pops.

“It is a home-based business,” she said. “I am home all the time, I always answer my phone. I take orders now. One of my goals is to eventually have things ready for sale. I don’t think my name is well established enough for that yet.”

Thyng doesn’t do cheesecakes.

“I am willing to try things,” she said. “I have been working with a variety of flavors. Right now it is a lot of vanilla/vanilla and fruit. My husband can’t believe how many fruits are going on these cakes. Strawberry, blueberry/lemon is big right now too. I don’t know if it is just seasonal or what.”

Thyng plans to offer apple and pumpkin flavors this fall.

It takes about two hours to do a cake, she said.

Thyng doesn’t have a website yet but does have a Facebook page where photos of her baking can be seen. She doesn’t take orders over Facebook, asking that customers call 207-491-4873 to place orders.

“I like to talk to people,” she said. “There is less chance of miscommunication.”
