BUCKFIELD —The Select Board accepted the lowest bid to purchase winter sand, contingent on the quality of the sand.
The town received two bids for sand with K.R. Youland & Son of Turner submitting the lowest bid at $10 per cubic yard delivered or $6 per yard if the town picks it up. The other bid was for $13.50 and $8.50, respectively.
But before finalizing the deal, selectmen want to make sure the quality of the sand will be sufficient to use on roads this winter, and the bids did not come with a recommendation. The board will seek guidance from Road Commissioner Weldon Lucas before signing off on the bid.
In other business, Michael Iveson was elected as the new board chairman, while Azalea Cormier was picked as vice chairman.
The meeting was the first for Cormier and Sandra Fickett, who were elected at last week’s Town Meeting referendum. It was also the first meeting with former Selectman Cameron Hinkley serving as interim Town Manager. Hinkley replaced Lorna Nichols who left to become town manager in Belgrade.
The board voted to renew a lease with the Historical Society to use the second floor of the Municipal Center. The new lease will also provide the society the use of one room on the first floor. The lease is for three years.
The board is expected to act at its next meeting on setting the municipal fee schedule for marijuana businesses. Town voters approved an ordinance last week to allow marijuana establishments in town.
