DEAR SUN SPOTS: For months now, there have been no working lights in the parking area near the most heavily used entrance to the Auburn Walmart. If they are trying to reduce light pollution, it’s not the best place to be doing that. It’s difficult enough for drivers to avoid hitting pedestrians and other vehicles, even when the area is well lit. What gives? — No name, Auburn

ANSWER: I decided to research this by first contacting Charlie DeAngelis, Auburn city electrician, to see if he could help me “shed any light” on the subject. As I thought, the ownership of the lighting and electrical issues is not connected with the city, but Mr. DeAngelis took a drive over to the area this past weekend to have a look and agrees that your concerns are valid and that the absence of lighting in the vicinity of both Walmart and Lowe’s is a major safety issue and Walmart’s responsibility. There will be more information to come after DeAngelis connects with Walmart management.

He added that this isn’t the first time this lighting system has failed and Walmart personnel most likely are  aware of the outage. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, dear reader, especially since conditions will soon worsen because of darkness falling earlier and the upcoming inclement weather. DeAngelis promised to get back to me after he speaks with Walmart management. He’s hoping to at least get an idea of the timeline for the repair of this underground system then I can notify readers. In the meantime, be especially careful as you navigate through that area in the evening hours.
